On the southern tip of Mauritius, Souillac was once a tiny fishing village before it branched out into sugar cane production. The coast around the town is beaten by a particularly rough sea, totally different from your average postcard scene. With a population of more than 6,000, Souillac is the capital of Savanne District.

Quatre Bornes is one of the biggest towns in Mauritius. Situated in the centre of Mauritius, this town of a population of over 80,000 is very commercial. Its shops are, in fact, the most interesting thing about it!

Tamarin is a charming little Mauritian town in the Black River district. On the island’s West Coast, in the driest region of Mauritius, Tamarin is best known for the ocean rollers that break on the beaches from June to August to the delight of surfers! Exposed to the West, the town’s beaches offer magnificent sunsets and an incredible view of the island’s mountains.

Grand Baie is Mauritius’ premier resort town and is known as an unmissable destination by tourists and Mauritians who want to escape the bustle of the capital.

The old colonial capital of Mauritius, Mahébourg is in the South-West of the island, on the shores of the country’s biggest lagoon. It is the town that is closest to the island’s only airport. Unusual in its mix of colonial and Creole architecture, Mahébourg is a sleepy coastal village that is only really animated on market day or for festivals. The biggest town in the Grand Port district, Mahébourg has a population of more than 15,700 (figures from the 2000 census)
